Soccer moms, hockey dads get break

The Daily News (Halifax) (Wed 27 Apr 2005 Byline: Peter McLaughlin) reports hockey dads and soccer moms got a break in yesterday's provincial budget, scoring some financial help with the promise of a $150 tax deduction for every child registered in organized sports or recreation programs. If the measure passes, Nova Scotia will become only the second province to offer tax relief to parents of children who play sports, after Quebec. It's not big money, but it sends a strong message that government wants to help more kids onto the province's soccer pitches and basketball courts. The $1-million annual tax measure will only save families about $15 per child on registration fees this year, but over time, the deduction will grow, providing a powerful incentive to get children active.
