TORONTO, Oct. 5 /CNW/ - Health Promotion Minister Jim Watson walked to school today with students from St. Michael's Catholic School to celebrate International Walk to School Week.
"Walking to school contributes to a healthy and active lifestyle," said Watson. "Participation in sport and physical activity is one of the best ways to maintain good health and the earlier we become active the healthier a life we lead."
St. Michael's Catholic School is one of more than 1,100 Ontario schools involved in Green Communities Canada's Active and Safe Routes program supported in part by the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion's Active 2010 Communities in Action Fund.
The Ministry of Health Promotion supports the Active and Safe Routes To School program to encourage healthier lifestyles among children and youth through increased physical activity.
International Walk to School Week (IWALK) is celebrated from October 3-7, 2005 in almost 40 countries on six continents. The IWALK Club encourages student participation throughout the school year. Together these two programs help make every day "walk to school day" for many Ontario families.
The IWALK Club is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion's Active 2010 Communities in Action Fund (www.active2010.ca) and Transport Canada's Moving on Sustainable Transportation program.
